Our story

ÖselBirch is a family-owned company founded in 2016 by two siblings, Anne-Liis Theisen and Ardon Kaerma. Born out of their love for Estonian nature and traditional plant-based refreshments, ÖselBirch began by offering an organic range of drinks based on birch water. Inspired by their grandmother's method of fermenting birch sap to extend its shelf life, the siblings launched their first product line. Since then, the company has expanded its portfolio to include non-fermented birch water and food supplements featuring birch sap and chaga mushroom. ÖselBirch is committed to creating natural products that support sustainable production methods, promote biodiversity, and give back to the environment.

The Story Behind Our Name:

Our name, ÖselBirch, combines "Ösel," the old German name for Saaremaa, and "Birch," a tree that's both amazing and helpful in nature. Just like superheroes, birch trees have many powers. They can grow in places where other plants struggle and help other plants grow there too. Birch trees have special friends called nitrogen-fixing bacteria that live in their roots. These bacteria have a superpower of turning air into food for plants, making the soil better for everyone. Birch trees also give back to the earth when their leaves fall and break down, returning important nutrients to the soil. Plus, their roots help the soil become less compact, allowing water to soak in more easily. As if that weren't enough, these trees are also like hotels for birds, insects, and mammals, offering them food and a place to stay. So, you see, ÖselBirch isn't just a name, it's our way of saying we're "barking up the right tree" when it comes to using the gifts of nature responsibly and supporting a world where everyone can grow and thrive.
