6 things we learned about toxicity and detoxing at UPW London 2017

This past weekend part of our ÖselBirch team attended the Tony Robbins ‘Unleash the Power Within’ seminar in London. Besides walking on burning hot coals without getting a single blister and learning a lot about ourselves, we also learned a lot about cleansing and detoxifying our bodies. Today we wanted to share this knowledge with you and thus put together a list of 6 most important things we learned about toxicity and how to cleanse our body:

1. If you have following symptoms, you might have a chronic low-level toxicity:

Feelings of fatigue, muscle aches, joint pain, congestion, headaches, bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, sleep issues, trouble concentrating, food cravings, skin issues, trouble losing weight and menstrual issues. If you struggle with some or more of these symptoms then you need to take action!

2. Stop eating processed foods!

Do not destroy the enzymes in your food by microwaving, steaming and baking. And most importantly: stop eating fast food! Instead, start to cook more at home and add more raw foods into your diet! By doing so, you increase the amount of digestive enzymes in your body that help us break down food particles into nutrients. They can also boost your immune system and help us absorb vitamins and minerals. Foods that are rich in probiotics are also good for you: Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are good for your health, especially your digestive system. They help to move food through your gut and thus keep your gut healthy. Probiotics can be found in fermented foods and drinks, like sauerkraut, kimchi or naturally fermented birch water.

3. Decrease the amount of refined sugar and flour in your diet

The number one cause of fatty liver (Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease) in America is sugar and flour! In fact, sugar is 8x more addictive than cocaine! Now let that one sink in…
For your detox (Tony Robbins’ suggest a period of 10 days) it is recommended to stop consuming sugar and wheat flour in general. However, for the rest of the time we suggest you reduce the amounts and switch refined white sugar to honey or unrefined sugar. Also, wholewheat flour (aka. graham flour) gives you much more nutrients than plain white wheat flour.


Detox allows you to reset and unhook yourself from the addictive powers of sugar, flour and over-processed food-like substances. It is ideal to make a dietary cleanse at least once or twice per year to remove the toxins and pollution in your body. However, we do not recommend you do a juice or water diet, apply the principles written here and you’re on a good way to detoxify your body. Because toxins make you gain weight, detoxifying can also be a huge help in losing these few extra kilos that you have been struggling with!

5. Keep glutathione levels high in your body!

Glutathione is the main detoxifier in the body. To keep the level high, your diet should include:
High quality proteins like nuts and seeds, nut butters, lentils, or deep sea fish like salmon, tuna and halibut.
Good fats like olive, flaxseed, Omega 3 & 6, and avocado.
PS. You should not heat cold pressed oils!
– Non-startchy vegetables, like cabbage, broccoli, collards, kale, brussel sprouts, chinese cabbage, bokchoy, kohlrabi, turnips, radishes.
Complex carbohydrates like whole grain basmati and jasmine rice, buckwheat, quinoa & spelt.
– Also, include anti-inflammatory herbs in your diet, like turmeric, cayenne pepper, thyme, rosemary, chili powder, cumin, onions, garlic, cilantro, cinnamon, coriander and parsley.

6. Read labels!

Fruit juice isn’t always a more natural or healthier alternative – some juices contain up to 5 teaspoon of sugar per serving AND contain chemical preservatives! Read labels to find out the real nutritional value and make sure you get all natural ingredients! If you can’t pronounce an ingredient, you should probably not consume it!
